Cabo Seafood Grill & Cantina - Oxnard, California

Starving after a five-hour visit to the Getty Villa and a leisurely drive down the Pacific Coast Highway we were looking forward to a warm meal. Stopping at our hotel we googled the restaurants suggested by our hotel and decided on the Cabo Seafood Grill & Cantina based on a number of very positive online reviews. Happily, we were not disappointed.

The restaurant interior was multicolored and festive and full of people, even still we were quickly seated. Our waitress, friendly and attentive, told us that the caldo de pescado (fish soup with vegetables) was an often ordered dish and she recommended the freshly made corn tortillas over the flour which were commercial. Before we knew it, she brought us a holder filled with steamy, warm tortillas which we munched on along with tasty corn chips and salsa that we downed with Bohemia and Corona beer.

Based on her suggestions, my companion ordered the especiales de mexico a combo dish of your choice of three out of six entrees - the chicken enchilada, a chile relleno and a sope of carne asada. We also ordered the enchiladas con camaron, a shrimp enchilada in green chile sauce and the caldo de pescado which had cuts of zucchini, cabage, carrots, chunks of tilapia and a broth to die for. Each of our dishes were in the $10.50 range. Our only complaint was the sope de maize which we felt was a little dry and over fried than it should have been. Other than that, the service was fantastic, the ambiance authentic mexican (including the mariachis which we thought had been a recording) and the meal was more than satisfying. If we're ever in Oxnard again, we'll definitely make a return visit.
