Duke's Waikiki - Honolulu, Hawaii
Duke's Waikiki offered a nice break from shopping the International Marketplace and shops that dot the beachwalk along beautiful Waikiki Beach. Duke's, named after the famous surfer Duke Kahanamoku, is located in the lobby of the Outrigger Waikiki and not far from the statue honoring its namesake. When you walk in, it's like entering a cool, dark cavern until you reach the patio seating overlooking the pool. Then it brightens up, especially at the tables positioned against the patio enclosure which butts up to the beach and resort pool. Great views for sure.
We stopped to have drinks and from the pupus menu Duke's Nachos, a serving of beans, cheddar cheese, jalapeños, guacamole & sour cream and tortilla chips for $9.95. Salsa and guacamole were on the meager size and standard tourist fare, bland and needing some spice. The beach drinks were priced affordably at $6.75 and the Hawaiian Island Iced Tea made up of coconut rum, banana liqueur and a touch of passion fruit was good although I would've liked a bigger glass. Domestic beer was a deal at $4.50 a bottle and for $6.50 you could have a glass of Kimo’s Merlot via California.
Tourists in need of a breather, a beverage and a nice view of the beach can't go wrong visiting Duke's Waikiki. Prices for drinks and food are good, atmosphere is refreshing and people-watching is a nice distraction from the lure of the shops.
