Tomkat's Grille - Kauai

Finding a decent restaurant in Kauai was quite a task at 8:30 pm. First off, there is a limited selection of eateries to chose from as this island is one of least populated of all the islands. Secondly, prices are high regardless of quality of food which made our job that much harder.

After a quick search online we found Tomkat's Grille which was recommended for it's laid back atmosphere and affordable prices. Affordable in Kauai averages to about $15 a plate for dinner.

Starving, exhausted and just plain brain dead we found our way to the restaurant which is located in Koloa in the small and quaint shopping section. At 9pm it was pretty empty except for one other party. We were seated quickly and the atmosphere is very laid back, staff were in shorts and t-shirts and there was the cutest black cat, Samkat, making her way around the diners' legs.

We ordered shrimp scampi, $19.95 with side house salad for $4.95 and the mahi-mahi special with soy and lime sauce for $21.95. We also ordered fish and chips for $14.95. Our waitress, Lisa, was friendly and very accomodating, even after she realized she had mistakenly brought us the ahi instead of the mahi-mahi. She corrected the mistake and was very gracious. The meals were good portions and the scampi had a great garlic flavor and deliciously grilled shrimp. The fish and chips had nice chunky peices of fish and good homefries. The mahi-mahi however left much to be desired and came with a huge side of white rice. Vegetables and salad do not come with meals which can add up to a rather large bill.

Overall the service was great and the meal was filling and easy on the stomach.
